What would Riverside be like if large-scale corporate farming laws didn’t enter Indiana? Well, it would look a lot different.
This work was done in partnership with Toni Griffin’s Legacy Lands: Protopian Futures studio and CHDC non-profit; Urban Legacy Lands Initiative (now Blacklight Indy) that focuses on community revitalization and placemaking around historically marginalized and predominantly Black neighborhoods in Indianapolis.
I outlined an urban planning and climate policy proposal for Riverside, IN that aimed to decrease food insecurity, increase fresh food access and end food apartheid in the area. The proposal was to be completed in 3-4 months in downtown Indy, where I engaged with various stakeholders to understand local needs and perspecives. Conducted data analysis and ecological assessments of the neighborhood to look at potential food growing sites. I independently surveyed and interviewed micro-farms, city government officials, community members to understand existing needs and determine meaningful solutions for fresh and affordable food access in the area. I created various maps, diagrams and documented potential opportunities for renewable energy and sustainable farming practices to be implemented in the area.My project was chosen to be presented to the Mayor of Indianapolis, Congressperson and local community in April 2023.
